Woman rescued in Oakland apartment fire

OAKLAND — A woman was rescued by firefighters Tuesday night from her burning East Oakland apartment, officials said.

She was treated at the scene primarily for smoke inhalation before being taken to a hospital. Her age and condition were not immediately available.

The fire erupted about 9:14 p.m. Tuesday inside the woman’s second floor apartment, which is part of a two-story triplex in the 2000 block of 89th Avenue.

Battalion Fire Chief James Bowron said when the first of more than two dozen firefighters arrived on scene, “heavy fire was blowing out” of the apartment’s front window.

He said firefighters confirmed the woman was still inside the apartment, stretched a hose line up a stairwell and made entry inside the burning unit. They could hear the woman yelling for help and found her in a bedroom. She was brought outside and treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital.

Firefighters also rescued the woman’s dog, Bowron said.

The fire, which was declared under control at 9:50 p.m., was confined to the woman’s apartment. But three other residents of the triplex were displaced because power and gas to the building had to be shut off, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated to be at least $50,000.
