Mountain stories

Historian Jay Topping returns to History Happy Hour at the Ainsley House on July 18 with part 2 of his popular presentation on the history of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

This time, Topping  will dive deeper into the lives of the pioneers who built and shaped mountain life—from farmers and school founders to toll road operators and healers. He’ll talk about figures like Susan Schulteis, the “Dr. Quinn” of the mountains, who rode miles on horseback to deliver babies and tend to the sick, and was the first to reach the legendary Mountain Charlie after his infamous bear encounter.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Carriage House, 300 Grant St. Tickets are $25 at campbellmuseums.com.
