FREMONT — Southbound lanes of Interstate 680 will be closed to traffic in Fremont over the weekend as the California Department of Transportation performs critical bridge and pavement repairs.

The closure near the Mission San Jose Overpass will begin at 8 p.m. Friday with all southbound lanes closed to traffic and work beginning by 10 p.m. Construction is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Monday, July 28.

“These 55-hour closures are necessary to safely and efficiently complete key construction activities, including full bridge deck resurfacing and approach slab repairs,” Caltrans said in a press release announcing the closure and construction. “This work must be performed without live traffic to ensure worker and motorists safety. Concentrating these operations during weekend closures will help reduce the overall duration and impact of the project.”

Southbound traffic near the construction zone will be redirected through the Mission Boulevard off ramp and back onto the freeway at the next on-ramp.

Additional nighttime work, including pavement striping, barrier installation and other finishing elements, will take place through Spring 2026, according to the notice.
