The blaze broke out about 2:35 p.m. in the 3300 block of Gavota Avenue.

In a series of social media posts, San Jose Fire Department officials said two adults and two dogs were displaced from the house where the fire began. Fire officials had not accounted for one of the dogs in that house.

The adjacent house had four adults, four dogs and a cat, and fire officials said all were displaced because of exposure to the blaze. One cat also had not been found, fire officials said.

Red Cross officials were called to help the residents of the second home. Residents in the first home did not need help from the Red Cross, fire officials said.

“It was incredibly tough” to knock down the fire, Battalion Chief Shawn Tacklin told reporters.

“Some of the building construction and roofing construction was difficult to get through, especially where the fire was located. It had a large body of material ready to burn toward the rear of one of the homes that ignited and kept igniting as we put it out. It was very stubborn.”

Tacklin said investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze. It was not considered suspicious, he said.
