Hayward woman who fatally stabbed boyfriend says he was beating her

HAYWARD — Police are investigating a report of domestic violence that turned deadly Saturday when a 30-year-old man was fatally stabbed by his 25-year-old girlfriend, who told officers she was trying to stop him from assaulting her.

The woman was cooperative with officers, gave a statement and was not taken into custody after she was seen for a medical evaluation at a nearby hospital, Hayward police said in a news release.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a report of domestic violence in an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Depot Road, the news release said. Neighbors said they heard a loud argument between a man and a woman in a nearby unit, with sounds of items being thrown in the apartment.

When officers arrived, they found the woman in the stairwell of the building. She told them she was being physically assaulted by the man, who was her boyfriend, and she had stabbed him in self-defense, according to the news release. Officers entered her apartment and found the man unresponsive and suffering from a stab wound. He was moved into a hallway so that emergency responders could attempt life-saving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. The woman’s identity is not being released, and the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family.  Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call Detective Martinez at 510-293-7176.
