Kamala Harris will not run for governor of California

July 30, 2025
Kamala Harris will not run for governor of California

Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday she will not enter the race for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation but still leaving questions unanswered about her political future.

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor,” Harris posted on the social media site Bluesky on Wednesday afternoon. “I love this state, its people and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for governor in this election.”

Harris did not detail why she decided not to enter the race to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2027. Early polls suggested that the former vice president would reshape the race as a heavyweight candidate with plenty of name recognition and a massive fundraising capacity.

However, some observers suggested that Harris would face criticism on the campaign trail over her resounding defeat in the 2024 General Election to now-President Donald Trump and her staunch support of former President Joe Biden deep into the election cycle despite mounting concerns about his electability.

Harris did not address whether she would run again for U.S. President in 2028.

“For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office,” Harris’ post said.
