The retirement will end a career that has spanned more than 30 years. The city hired him to head their police department in 2021. He called his tenure as chief “the honor of a lifetime.”

He will step down at the end of 2025, according to city officials.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” Knox said in a statement, adding that he was “grateful for the dedication of the men and women of this department and the support of our community.”

As police chief, Knox began the department’s Professional Standards and Training unit and used a branding campaign to recruit new officers. He also introduced drones to the operation and added a police K9 that could detect bombs to the regional bomb squad.

Knox was a captain for the San Leandro police before the city of Walnut Creek hired him. The process of replacing him will begin immediately.
