AACI selected Ahrens for the honor because of “his unwavering advocacy and leadership advancing equity and access for underserved communities.”

“Just like the namesake of this award—Chinese American community leader Gordon Chan—I have prioritized giving back to our communities because I recognize and appreciate the opportunities our community has provided me,” Ahrens said in a release.

Historical heritage grants

Santa Clara County Historical Heritage Grant applications are now open for fiscal year 2026. Supported by County Park Charter Development Funds, a total of $785,549 will be awarded to projects that involve the stabilization, preservation, rehabilitation, restoration or interpretation of historic resources within a publicly accessible park in Santa Clara County.

Grant applicants have until Thursday, Oct. 23, to submit projects. Eligible organizations include public agencies and nonprofit corporations in Santa Clara County. The 28 parks operated by Santa Clara County Parks are not eligible.

An hourlong online workshop is planned for Thursday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. to provide information about the program and the application process. To register, applicants must email [email protected] and provide their name, the name of their organization, a sentence briefly describing the proposed project and their email address.

Past projects have included the Luis María Peralta Adobe in San José, the residence of José Manuel Gonzales, one of the founders of San José, which was built in 1797.
