San Jose, Oakland airports struggling in 2025 while SFO glides higher

Passenger traffic has weakened in 2025 for the San Jose and Oakland airports while San Francisco International Airport numbers have risen, this news organization’s review of the region’s most recent travel statistics shows.

The number of passenger trips over the most recent 12 months through mid-2025 brings into view the differing trends for the three airports, according to information provided by the travel hubs.

San Jose International Airport handled 11.38 million passengers over the one-year period that ended in June. That number is down 3.3% from the 11.77 million passengers for calendar year 2024.

Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport accommodated 9.93 million passengers during the same period ending in June, a decline of 8.2% from the 10.82 million in 2024.

Meanwhile, San Francisco International Airport handled 54.12 million passengers over the 12 months ending in June, up 3.5% from the 52.29 million in 2024.

All three airports remain below the passenger activity seen in 2019.

San Francisco airport’s passenger totals over the most recent 12 months are 5.9% below the 2019 benchmark of 57.49 million passengers.

In stark contrast, San Jose International Airport’s totals for the year-long period ending in June were 27.3% below the 15.65 million passengers it handled in 2019, which was an all-time high.

Oakland airport totals for the 12 months that ended in June were 25.8% below the 2019 total of 13.38 million passengers.

San Jose International Airport is experiencing some hopeful short-term trends, however.

The approximately 995,900 passengers that it handled in June marked the fourth straight month that passenger trips increased. June passenger activity was up 6.9% compared with May but down 8.9% compared with June 2024.

Oakland San Francisco Bay International Airport handled about 810,600 passengers in June, down 2.8% from May and down 20.2% from June of last year.

San Francisco International Airport accommodated 5.13 million passengers in June, up 5.5% from May and up 10.2% from June 2024.
