Salinas Valley inmate convicted of two stabbings

A Salinas Valley State Prison inmate has been convicted of two violent stabbings of fellow inmates, prosecutors said Friday.

A Monterey County jury found Moises Meraz Espinoza guilty of two counts of assault by a life prisoner, District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced.

Meraz Espinoza is currently serving a life sentence for murder, a press release noted.

Prosecutors said Meraz Espinoza stabbed his cellmate more than 20 times on Feb. 4, 2023, after the evening lockdown. The victim survived after being treated at Natividad Medical Center.

On Nov. 25, 2024, Meraz Espinoza attacked another inmate in the prison yard, again causing life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 27 and faces a maximum of life in prison.
