Distribution is a farmer’s market format: Participants must park, walk in and bring reusable bags for bulk produce and fruits and a cart for dry and canned goods, eggs, milk and other groceries. Each family picks up about 100 lbs. of food.

Safe and sober check

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety will operate a safety and sobriety checkpoint on Sept. 12 “to promote public safety by increasing awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving and serving as a deterrent to potential impaired drivers.”

Vehicles traveling northbound on Mathilda Avenue between San Aleso and West Maude avenues will be randomly stopped, and drivers will be evaluated to determine their sobriety. Officers will also look at the safety of the vehicle, use of seatbelts and the validity of the operator’s license. The checkpoint is scheduled to operate from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.

AACI honors Ahrens

Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) honored state Assemblymember Patrick Ahrens with the group’s Gordon N. Chan Leadership Award at its Back-to-School Summer Health Fair, held Aug. 2 at the AACI Community Health Center at 2400 Moorpark Ave.

AACI selected Ahrens for the honor because of “his unwavering advocacy and leadership advancing equity and access for underserved communities.”

“Just like the namesake of this award—Chinese American community leader Gordon Chan—I have prioritized giving back to our communities because I recognize and appreciate the opportunities our community has provided me,” Ahrens said in a release.
