SF Giants place right-handed starting pitcher on injured list

SF Giants place right-handed starting pitcher on injured list

The San Francisco Giants, as expected, officially placed Landen Roupp on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation on Friday although there remained no word as to how much time the right-handed starting pitcher might be forced to miss.

Roupp was scheduled to have an MRI done on his ailing knee on Thursday in San Francisco. In the third inning of what turned into an 8-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Roupp was struck by a line drive off the bat of Ramón Laureano and had to be carted off the field with a large brace on his left knee.

The results of the MRI were not immediately known. The Giants are in Milwaukee, where they will begin a three-game series at American Family Field against the Brewers, who own Major League Baseball’s best record at 80-48.

San Francisco (61-67) has lost three straight, is six games below .500 for the first time this season, and entered Friday 6 1/2 games behind the New York Mets for the National League’s third and final wild card spot. The Giants have 34 games remaining.

In 22 starts this season, Roupp had a 7-7 record and a 3.80 ERA over 106.2 innings as he entrenched himself in the Giants rotation. He had just been reinstated off the 15-day IL last Friday after he missed three starts with right elbow inflammation.

“It’s such an unfortunate moment, especially for him, obviously, but for the team, too,” Giants shortstop Willy Adames told reporters after Wednesday’s game. “He’s been doing really well for us all year long. He just came back, and now this happened. It’s really sad.”

In a corresponding move, the Giants also officially recalled left-hander Carson Whisenhunt, who will start Friday’s game. In three recent starts with the Giants this season, Whisenhunt has a 1-1 record and a 5.02 ERA over 14.1 innings. In his last start on Aug. 8 at home against Washington, Whisenhunt struck out five but also allowed three home runs in four innings in a 4-2 loss to the rebuilding Nationals.
