Man apparently steals California police pickup and says over radio: ‘I’ll tell you who has the car — I do’

A man allegedly stole a black-and-white police pickup truck in Long Beach on Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, leading officers on a short pursuit while talking about his family over the radio and saying he was going home before getting taken into custody, according to police and audio archives.

Just past 6:05 a.m., Long Beach officers were working parking enforcement in the 800 block of West 12th Street when the man entered the pickup and drove off, said Officer Eric Stachura, a Long Beach police spokesperson.

“Somebody just took off with my vehicle, westbound 12th, out of sight,” an officer radioed to dispatch, according to audio archives.

Over the radio, the officer said no weapons were in the truck.

“Let me say this to you, boys in blue and ladies in blue, I’ll tell you who has the car — I do,” the man said, according to Broadcastify, a firm that captures radio talk of some police and fire agencies. “And no one’s doing something wrong — something’s going on with my family. I’m going back home.

“I did not mean to do this to this officer,” the man continued. “He was not doing nothing, he was doing his duty. I’m about to take the GPS off of this, and I gotta get home.”

Officers found the truck at Pacific Place and Wardlow Road, leading to a brief pursuit, Stachura said.

At one point, the man acknowledges he sees officers behind him: “I don’t want to do this the whole way across the United States and be on the news, you know?”

An officer on the radio at one point tells the man: “Pull over, and we’ll help you get home, OK?”

The man eventually did pull over, and less than 10 minutes after the pickup was stolen, taken into custody.

Further information about the suspect was not released by police.
