49ers will mix and match radio play-by-play while Papa’s away

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers will play mix-and-match with their radio play-by-play announcers while lead broadcaster Greg Papa recovers from cancer.

The following announcers will work alongside analyst Tim Ryan on 49ers outlets (KNBR-680 and 104.5 FM, KSAN 107.7 The Bone, KSFO-810 AM) when the regular season begins Sept. 7 on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.

With announcers beholden to their own schedules with other duties, five were identified as fill-ins for the 2025 season:

Guy Haberman: Served as the 49ers preseason television play-by-play with Ryan and was identified as the “primary fill-in.” Haberman has television play-by-play duties for the Big Ten Network and has worked extensively in the Bay Area as a radio host.

Justin Allegri: The voice of California football and men’s basketball and previously a lead play-by-play annoucner for San Jose State for 11 years. Also has been a radio voice of the San Jose Giants since 2015 and been a radio show voice for MLB “The Show” since 2014.

Troy Clardy: The voice of Stanford football and men’s basketball and does college football play-by-play for Westwood One radio. Has worked multiple NFL games on Compass Media Networks and done work with the Pac-12 network and called NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament games.

Carlos Ramirez: Host o the 49ers’ Pre- and Postgame Live on NBC Sports Bay Area. Has covered Giants and A’s and called games for the NFL, NBA, MLB and MLS in English and Spanish. Part of the 49ers’ Spanish Radio Network from 2019-21.

Jack Smith: Local talent from Mitty High in 2021, won the 2025 Jim Nantz Award  for his work at USC as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sports broadcaster. Currently a media relations assistant and radio voice of the Fredericksburg Nationals, a Class-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Papa announced on Aug. 2 he was stepping away from his duties to focus on his recovery from an undisclosed form of cancer. Papa, 62, has covered sports across the Bay Area for nearly four decades, beginning as the Warriors’ radio play-by-play voice in the 1980s and ’90s. He called A’s games on TV in the 1990s and early 2000s, then crossed the bay to call Giants games on TV and radio in the mid-2000s.
