Bay FC adds former USC star defender for remainder of season

Bay FC bolstered its backfield depth for the final two months of the season by acquiring former USC star Brooklyn Courtnall on loan from the North Carolina Courage on Thursday.

Courtnall, a rookie defender, will join the Bay FC roster for Monday’s game at Angel City FC.

“Brooklyn is a dynamic addition to our roster, and we’re thrilled to have her with Bay FC for the remainder of the season,” Bay FC head coach Albertin Montoya said in a release issued by the team. “Her pace, work ethic, and competitiveness bring real value to the team, and we’re excited to see the impact she can make on the pitch.”

Bay FC (4W–5D–8L) is 12th in the NWSL standings, four points out of eighth place. Starting with Monday’s game in Los Angeles against 10th-place Angel City FC, the club has nine regular-season matches remaining.

The second-year club is coming off consecutive one-goal losses, including a 1-0 decision before a league-record crowd of 40,091 at the Giants’ waterfront ballpark on Saturday, and hasn’t won a league match since June 7, going 0-2-4 in its past six matches.

Bay FC gave up a conditional loan fee to add Courtnall, who appeared in three matches for the Courage, who are tied for the eighth and final spot in the NWSL playoff race.

Courtnall was a four-year starter at USC. She was a first-team All-American as a senior and helped lead the Trojans to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. She scored her first goal as a professional July 25 in a friendly against storied Liga MX Femenil side Chivas.
