Disneyland closes 8 attractions during hectic Halloween season

Disneyland will close eight attractions for seasonal refurbishments as the Anaheim theme park resort heads into the hectic Halloween season that has become one of the busiest times of the year.

Big Thunder Mountain, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, Main Street Cinema, Pixie Hollow and “Fantasmic” will temporarily close in September as part of the standard refurbishment schedule at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

The eight new attraction closures join Radiator Spring Racers, Star Tours, Storybook Land Canal Boats, Casey Jr. Circus Train and “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” that were already shuttered for refurbishment.

Big Thunder Mountain roller coaster in Disneyland’s Frontierland will close Sept. 2 for an extended refurbishment expected to run through at least Oct. 9.

Traffic on the Rivers of America at Disneyland will be disrupted with the Mark Twain Riverboat closed for refurbishment on Sept. 8-11 and the Sailing Ship Columbia out of commission Sept. 2-4, Sept. 8-11 and Sept. 22-25.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant in Disneyland’s Fantasyland will close for a brief refurbishment Sept. 16-17.

Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island will be closed for a brief refurbishment Sept. 15-17.

The Main Street Cinema screening the short film “The Last Verse” in a tribute to the Disney songwriting brothers Robert and Richard Sherman during Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration will be closed for refurbishment on Sept. 8-25.

Pixie Hollow in Fantasyland will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays in September (Sept. 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25 and 30) after the Disneyland character meet-and-greet area was recently closed for a 10-month refurbishment.

The “Fantasmic” nighttime spectacular on Disneyland’s Rivers of America will be dark Sept. 2-4, Sept. 8-11, Sept. 14-18, Sept. 21-25 and Sept. 28-30.

The Star Tours motion simulator in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland will return Sept. 5 after an extended refurbishment that began in late June.

Radiator Spring Racers in DCA’s Cars Land will reopen Sept. 26 after a six-week refurbishment.

Storybook Land Canal Boats and Casey Jr. Circus Train will remain closed through at least Oct. 9 as the intertwined Fantasyland attractions undergo an extended refurbishment that began in July.

The “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” show closed in April and is not expected to return until fall 2026 after the yearlong run of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration.

The new “Walt Disney — A Magical Life” that debuted in July will run by itself during its initial run and will then play in rotation with “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” in Disneyland’s Main Street Opera House.
