ICE agents make appearance in Concord

CONCORD — An appearance by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents in the city over the weekend prompted a response from the police department that it did not assist the action.

In a statement, Concord police said the ICE activity occurred Friday. They did not say where federal agents appeared or when in the day they were spotted.

ICE did not respond immediately to emails inquiring about their presence.

“We did not assist in this activity in any way and have no details on this federal operation,” Concord police wrote in a statement posted to its social media. “The City of Concord Police Department is dedicated to serving and protecting all members of our community, regardless of immigration status.”

The department in its statement said it’s policy is not to enforce federal civil immigration laws or to detain individuals based solely on their immigration status. They also do not conduct raids. The policy is in compliance with state law, police said.

“The focus is on public safety, building trust and ensuring that everyone feels safe reporting crimes and seeking our assistance when needed,” police said in their statement. They added that their policy “is posted and available to the public.”
