Week 3: Where to find our complete coverage
Here are this week’s top matchups:
Friday
Alameda (3-0) at Mt. Diablo (3-0), 7:30 p.m.: Mt. Diablo will play its first home game on campus since its new field was burned just before the start of the season. The setback hasn’t affected the Red Devils as the Concord school has opened with three straight blowout wins. Michael Vasquez threw for three touchdowns in a win over Hillsdale last week. Running back and defensive end Antonio Campbell III has been a force on both sides of the ball. But this game could be Mt. Diablo’s toughest yet. Alameda, which shut out Prospect 48-0 last week, boasts a strong offense behind quarterback Casey Koga-Dean and running back Christian DeGuzman. The Hornets have beaten their three opponents by an average of 36 points. HSRating.com gives Mt. Diablo an 81% chance to win this game, projecting the Red Devils to prevail 35-21. – Nathan Canilao
Christopher (2-1) at Willow Glen (1-2), 7:15 p.m.: This South Bay battle pits the reigning champions of two separate divisions of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Christopher won the highest division, the Mt. Hamilton, last year behind departed star quarterback Jaxen Robinson, who is now playing for Northern Arizona. In his stead is younger brother Dylan Robinson, a sophomore who has started all three games for the Cougars this season. He’s gone through some growing pains but has thrown four touchdowns and no interception in his past two games, both wins. He went 12 of 13 against Gilroy for 174 yards in a 42-7 win. Willow Glen is led by senior QB Aidan Akery, named last season’s BVAL Santa Teresa-Valley MVP after leading the Rams to a 10-0 regular-season record. HSRatings.com projects that Christopher will win 22-21 on Friday. — Christian Babcock
Foothill (2-1) vs. San Leandro (3-0) at Burrell Field in San Leandro, 7 p.m.: Two years ago, these teams each won one game. Last year, San Leandro had six wins, Foothill four. Progress has continued thus far this season, with San Leandro off to its best start since 2005 and Foothill bouncing back with two wins after losing to Monte Vista in Week 1. Last week, San Leandro rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Granada 14-10 as Justin Ammons ran for a TD and Devin Martinez passed for one. Foothill routed Kennedy-Fremont 55-14 in Week 3 behind Dylan Souza’s 154 yards and two TDs on the ground and Andrew Nelson’s three TD passes. HSRatings.com projects San Leandro to win 31-24 on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
Piedmont (1-2) at Aragon (2-1), 7 p.m.: Coming off double-digit losses to Salesian and Middletown, Piedmont entered Week 3 in desperate need of a feel-good result. The Highlanders got it, routing a Berean Christian team 45-12 that beat Middletown in Week 1. Xavier Henderson scored four touchdowns and Jimmy Lagios passed for two against Berean. Aragon beat Pioneer 26-21 and Oak Grove 41-13 to open the season, then got beat by crosstown rival San Mateo 31-7 last week. Nine of Aragon’s touchdowns have come through the air, with Logan Padian and Isaac Martinez each passing for four. HSRatings.com’s computer picks Piedmont to win 31-28 on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
Saturday
The King’s Academy (2-0) at No. 22 Sacred Heart Prep (2-1), 2 p.m.: TKA lost star receiver Kyle Welch to Riordan weeks before training camp, but it hasn’t affected the Knights to this point. TKA hasn’t allowed a point in either of its season-opening wins, a 35-0 rout of Aptos and a 58-0 demolition of Fremont-Oakland. SHP will present a much stiffer test. Sophomore QB Ricky Gutierrez has played well for TKA in the early going, completing 61.5% of his passes and throwing three TDs in each game. The Knights have a number of running backs to lean on as well, including senior Justin Turner, sophomore Jonathan Carrillo Contreras and junior Drew Martinez. Junior Aaron Duncan is a hybrid rushing/receiving threat. Junior Adrian Barnett went for 101 receiving yards against Aptos. SHP runs through senior RB/MLB Maxime Morelle, a towering back who punishes defenses at 6-foot-1, 240 pounds and keyed the Gators’ win over Half Moon Bay last week. HSRatings.com projects TKA will win 28-21. — Christian Babcock
