Midpen has new volunteer program for trail lovers

Midpen volunteer program

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has a new volunteer program for those who love local trails.

Midpen maintains a trail network of over 250 miles of trails across more than 70,000 acres of open space. The Trails and Infrastructure Volunteer Program is open to anyone who would like to help maintain this network, which residents use to hike, run and bike every day.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with Midpen staff on a variety of projects, like restoring and improving trails, clearing debris and repairing fences.

“Each project directly supports Midpen’s strategic resource management goals, helping to build more resilient ecosystems and ensure our trails can handle whatever the weather brings,” said the district in a press release. “This work complements our expert trail-building teams by taking on light maintenance tasks, allowing staff to dedicate resources to larger-scale and complex projects involving heavy machinery.”

The program is open to seasoned volunteers and first-timers, like high school students who need community service hours.

Opera lectures

The San Francisco Opera Guild will be hosting a lecture on Oct. 15 at the Terraces of Los Gatos.

Lecturer Simon Williams will be presenting on “Parsifal.” at 2 p.m. The opera follows a knight’s journey to heal a king and bring back the Knights of the Holy Grail. Some themes explored by the story are compassion, temptation and redemption.

The San Francisco Opera Guild and the San Jose Opera Guild are collaborating for this series of opera lectures. Most of the lectures take place in the Addision-Penzak Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos unless otherwise noted. On Nov. 4, a lecture on “The Monkey King” will be hosted by Dr. Yining Lin. On June 2, 2026, “Elektra” will be discussed.
