He was an East Bay church deacon who allegedly had a secret life. Now the murders have come to light, police say.

The deadly incident happened Sept. 18 at the corner of D Street and W. 19th Street. The gunfire about 10:20 p.m. killed 33-year-old Julio Castaneda, of Oakley, and 42-year-old Thomas Espinoza, whose city of residence authorities do not know.

Both died at the scene.

Injured in the shooting and hospitalized were a 36-year-old man and 15-year-old boy. The teenager initially was listed in critical condition. Authorities have not responded to requests for an update on his condition.

Authorities days after the shooting said the older man was expected to survive.

The fatal shootings brought to five the number of homicides investigated by Antioch police in 2025. Police investigated 11 in the first nine months of 2024 en route to a two-decades-high total of 16 for the year.

Residents of the neighborhood said they heard about 10 to 15 rounds of gunfire.

Police have not any arrests, nor have they publicly identified anyone as a suspect.

The killings happened on a deadly day in the East Bay. Contra Costa prosecutors have charged a Walnut Creek man with two counts of murder, alleging that he stabbed his wife and mother-in-law to death that same night.
