Sharks ship two players to Philadelphia Flyers, resolving contract crunch

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks acquired the contract for defenseman Ryan Ellis and a 2026 conditional sixth-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday for forward Carl Grundstrom and minor league defenseman Artem Guryev.

Ellis, 34, has not played due to injury since November 2021 and will likely be placed on long-term injured reserve by the Sharks. In 11 seasons with the Nashville Predators and Flyers, Ellis has posted 275 points (76 goals, 199 assists) in 566 games.

Grundstrom, 27, had nine points in 56 games with San Jose in 2024-25 but was on the bubble as far as earning a spot on this year’s roster, and might have been a candidate to be placed on waivers today by the Sharks had he remained with the team.

Grundstrom was acquired by the Sharks from the Los Angeles Kings for defenseman Kyle Burroughs in June 2024, and subsequently by San Jose signed to a two-year, $3.6 million contract.

By trading Guryev, who was among the first players cut during training camp, the Sharks are now down to 48 contracts, leaving open the possibility, for now, of keeping prospects Michael Misa and Sam Dickinson throughout the season. If nothing had changed and Misa and Dickinson were to play 10 or more games with the Sharks this season, the first year of their entry-level contracts would have kicked in and put the team over the 50-contract limit.
