Man shot last month next to Oakland’s Lake Merritt dies from wounds

OAKLAND — A man shot Sept. 27 on a Lake Merritt area cul-de-sac marred by violence in the past has died from his wounds, authorities said Monday.

Isaiah Ireland, 24, who lived in another area of Oakland, died Friday night at a hospital where he had been since the shooting.

The shooting happened about 3 a.m. Sept. 27 on a cul-de-sac in the 1300 block of Lakeshore Avenue next to Lake Merritt where a large group of people had gathered.

Ireland got into a dispute with another person, who ended up shooting him, police said.

Other people present drove Ireland to a hospital before police responded to the scene. The shooter fled before police arrived.

A motive for the shooting has not been confirmed. No information about a suspect has been released.

The killing is the 54th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 70 homicides in the city.

Anyone with information may call homicide investigators at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.

In the last several years the three-block cul-de-sac, which has become known for large gatherings of people particularly on weekends, has seen other acts of violence, including homicides, shootings and robberies. Before the Sept. 27 shooting, the most recent significant violence there was the non-fatal shootings of a 25-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man who were Sacramento residents.
