SF Giants’ Bailey named Fielding Bible’s 2025 Defensive Player of the Year

SF Giants’ Bailey named Fielding Bible’s 2025 Defensive Player of the Year

Patrick Bailey appears to be a lock to win his second straight Gold Glove Award after being named a finalist, but there’s another honor he’ll be adding to his résumé as well.

Bailey was named Fielding Bible’s Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday afternoon, winning his second Fielding Bible Award at catcher as well.

The 26-year-old Bailey joins Ke’Bryan Hayes (’23) and Daulton Varsho (’24) as the only players to win Fielding Bible Defensive Player of the Year since the award’s inception in 2023. He is the first catcher to win the award.

“Patrick Bailey has many ways of controlling a game as a catcher,” said Sports Info Solutions editorial operations lead Mark Simon. “He is a leader on the field with the way he supports his pitching staff defensively through pitch framing, stolen base prevention, and pitch blocking. He is a deserving honoree as Defensive Player of the Year.”

Bailey had one of the most statistically impressive seasons in Statcast history. Over 132 games, Bailey had a Fielding Run Value of +31, the most in a single season by any defensive player since 2018. Bailey was also worth +25 Catcher Framing Runs, which is also the most in a single season by any catcher since ’18.

Along with his elite framing, Bailey threw out a career-high 27 caught stealings while recording an average pop time of 1.86 seconds, tied with the Philadelphia Phillies’ J.T. Realmuto and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Endy Rodriguez for the best in all the majors.

Should Bailey also win his second career Gold Glove Award, he would become the first Giant to take home the hardware in back-to-back seasons since shortstop Brandon Crawford won three straight (2015-17).
