Warriors coach Kerr praises mayor Lurie for helping avert Trump ‘surge’ in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – On a day when protests broke out in the East Bay over an influx of federal immigration agents into the region, Warriors coach Steve Kerr praised San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie for his part in ensuring that a “surge” of personnel did not enter the city.

Lurie announced on Thursday morning that after a phone call with President Donald Trump, that federal personnel would not come to the city.

Before the team’s home opener against Denver at Chase Center in San Francisco, Kerr expressed admiration for the mayor in how he handled the situation.

“Daniel Lurie is an absolute superstar,” Kerr said. “We’re so lucky to have him leading our city. I think everybody who lives here has felt the rebound, and the city’s heading in a really good direction. So many good things are happening.”

Trump also credited conversations with the region’s tech leaders, such as Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, for his decision.

“They want to give it a ‘shot,’” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Therefore, we will not surge San Francisco on Saturday. Stay tuned!”

Customs and Border Protection squad arrived in Oakland earlier the same day, and were met with protesters.

Kerr is no stranger to making political statements.

The previous week, Kerr had attended a “No Kings” rally in opposition of the Trump administration.

In April, the longtime Warriors coach wore a Harvard shirt in a show of support for the university, which was under fire from the administration.
