SAN JOSE — The San Jose High football team couldn’t have asked for a better start.
The Bulldogs recovered an onside kick to begin the game. Then on the first play from scrimmage Cypress Funes hit Omar Gomez with a 56-yard bomb for a touchdown.
Boom. But San Jose would pass only one more time all game.
When the Bulldogs went to the double wing is when the game turned decisively in their favor.
In a startling exhibition of totally dominant power football, San Jose ran the ball 52 times for 350 yards in a 46-9 win over a Prospect team that went into the game unbeaten and in first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s West Valley Division.

With the win, San Jose (5-3, 4-1) has a chance to make history. For years the Bulldogs would play Lincoln in the Big Bone game on Thanksgiving, which would preclude any possibility of taking part in the Central Coast Section playoffs.
Now with the Lincoln game played early in the season, San Jose would advance to the playoffs as the West Valley champion with victories in its final two regular-season games against Evergreen Valley and Mt. Pleasant.
“We are senior heavy,” San Jose coach Raul Sandoval said. “They realize it and want to go out with a bang. Hopefully the next two weeks we come out with W’s and make history.”
After that touchdown on the first play of the game, Eden Cortes ran for a two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead. Nothing unusual there, simply the team’s mode of operation. San Jose went for two after every touchdown and also attempted onside or squib kicks on every kickoff.
Prospect responded with a field goal by Christopher Rivera and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Cody Roberts to Henry Reynolds to take a 9-8 lead.
But that was when San Jose seized control.

A 9-yard scoring run by Gomez put the Bulldogs ahead to stay and Eden Cortes’ 4-yard run made it 22-9 at halftime.
San Jose took the second-half kickoff and went 65 yards in 10 plays with Bryan Cortes scoring from 25 yards out. Then it was Roman Rodriguez scoring on a 40-yard run and finally Agustine Cortes from the 1 to close out the scoring.
“We have a strong line,” Sandoval said. “They’ve been together the past four years.”

The 52 carries and 350 yards on the ground were spread among 12 different ball carriers. Gomez led the way with 96 yards on 12 carries.
“We know we have the upper hand when we get the ball into the running back’s hands,” Gomez said. “We have a lot of dogs who can run the ball.”
Prospect started the season 0-3 in nonleague play, but had won its first four division games before Friday.
“They just get in that double wing and pound it down your throat,” Prospect coach Jake Shaughnessy said of San Jose. “All the credit in the world to them. They play to their strength. What they did tonight is what we saw on film, what we prepared for all week. We just couldn’t execute because they’re really that good.”
