South Bay emergency shelters open as cold snap begins

Officials in the South Bay opened emergency warming shelters Saturday evening as cold temperatures descended on the region.

In San Jose, an emergency shelter is open overnight at the Roosevelt Community Center, 901 E. Santa Clara St. The center is a space for people to warm up and sleep. It will be open through February 11, city officials said on X. No referrals or recommendations are needed and pets are welcome.

Residents can also call the Here4You Hotline at 408-385-2400 for a referral to other warming centers in Santa Clara County.

Cold and frosty weather is expected in the Bay area Saturday night and into early next week, according to the National Weather Service. A low of 32 degrees Fahrenheit is forecasted for Saturday night. The cold snap may be dangerous for “unsheltered and marginally sheltered” people, the weather service said. A frost advisory is in place for most of the Bay Area.
