Rio Vista Bridge to close for two weekends in November

Rio Vista Bridge to close for two weekends in November

Caltrans is preparing for two upcoming weekend closures of the Rio Vista Bridge —officially known as the Helen Madere Memorial Bridge — as part of a repair project on the critical State Route 12 crossing.

The bridge, a key link between Solano and Sacramento counties, will be closed twice in November for intensive repair and paving work. Each closure will last approximately 55 hours, beginning late Friday night and ending early Monday morning:

9 p.m. Friday, November 7 to 4 a.m. Monday, November 10
9 p.m. Friday, November 14 to 4 a.m. Monday, November 17

During each closure, motorists will face detours that could add up to two hours of additional travel time between Rio Vista and Sacramento County. Caltrans urges drivers to plan ahead, expect significant delays, and avoid the bridge during the closure periods when possible.

The Rio Vista Bridge, which spans the Sacramento River and serves as one of the few river crossings in the region, has long required periodic maintenance due to its age and constant exposure to heavy traffic and marine conditions. Originally opened in 1960, the vertical-lift bridge accommodates both highway travelers and river traffic, with the center span raising to allow ships to pass through. Because of its unique design and heavy daily use, regular rehabilitation projects are essential to keep it safe and functional.

The current project is needed to repair the damage from a vehicle collision with the bridge’s East Portal.

Caltrans officials say that completing the work through weekend closures helps minimize weekday congestion. “The 55-hour weekend bridge closure schedule will lessen total project workdays and help avoid the wait times during peak commute hours during the work week,” the agency said in previous statements about work on the bridge.

Work schedules may change depending on weather, material availability, or unforeseen circumstances. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow down when driving near construction areas to ensure the safety of workers and travelers alike.
