Kimberly Guilfoyle alarms diplomats in Greece with lavish welcome party: report

Before Kimberly Guilfoyle, America’s new ambassador to Greece, presents her credentials to that country’s president, she’ll fly into Athens aboard a billionaire’s jet and host a glitzy nightclub party with Greek pop idol Konstantinos Argiros, the Daily Mail has reported.

But Guilfoyle’s party plans at a downtown Athens club, along with her friendship with Argiros and billionaire Eric Vassilatos, have raised concerns among people trying to help her transition from MAGA activist and former Fox News host into a credible diplomat, according to the Daily Mail.

“We look like the banana republic right now,” a source familiar with Guilfoyle’s weekend plans told the Daily Mail. “You know Russia and China are looking at us like fools.”

The Daily Mail obtained leaked plans for the party, organized at the Kentro Athinon, welcoming Guilfoyle to her job in Greece. The invitation asks attendees to RSVP to the U.S. Embassy in Athens. The Daily Mail also reported that Guilfoyle, Argiros and Vassilatos were evidently planning “a whirlwind of glamorous events, from VIP parties at a club to sun-soaked yacht trips in the Aegean on Vassilatos’s yacht.”

People close to Guilfoyle, a former San Francisco prosecutor who was once married to Gov. Gavin Newsom, have privately expressed concern that her high-profile socializing with a CEO and a Greek entertainer could undermine her credibility in the role, the Daily Mail said. One source told the Daily Mail that a number of influential Greek Americans are trying to get close to her, hoping that connecting with the ex-fiancee of Donald Trump Jr. would give them “an in” with his father, President Trump.

Not mentioned in the Daily Mail story is whether there are concerns about public backlash in the United States against Guilfoyle’s lavish party plans at this particular moment. The government remains shut down and millions of low-income Americans were facing delays in receiving food aid payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) this week. On Friday, two federal judges said the Trump administration must continue to fund SNAP,  using contingency funds until the government re-opens.

Guilfoyle’s new job as ambassador is set to officially begin next Tuesday when she will present her credentials to Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas, the Daily Mail reported. Her debut engagement is set for next Thursday and Friday, when she will host a reception at the Zappeion, a ceremonial building next to the Garden of Athens, in conjunction with the Transatlantic Energy Cooperation Forum. Other expected attendees include US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Greece’s Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou.

Trump nominated Guilfoyle to be ambassador to Greece last December, a few weeks after he won the presidency for the second time. Guilfoyle had become a top fundraiser and high-profile supporter of Trump after she began dating his oldest son in 2018. Up until the 2024 election, Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. officially remained engaged, despite reports in the Daily Mail and other outlets that he had “blindsided” her by beginning a “dalliance” with another woman, Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson.

By early December, it was reported that Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle had parted ways and that Trump Jr. and Anderson were a couple. After Trump nominated Guilfoyle to be ambassador to Greece, a source told People magazine that he offered her the job because Anderson wanted Guilfoyle “out of the area.” That is, dispatched across the Atlantic.

However, it’s also likely that Trump chose to make Guilfoyle an ambassador as a reward for her loyalty and service to his cause, and he probably appreciated that she didn’t make a fuss about breaking up with his son. Indeed, sources close to the Trump family insisted that Guilfoyle’s split from Trump Jr. was “amicable.”

The Daily Mail also reported this week that Guilfoyle initially lobbied to be named the ambassador to the Vatican before settling for her post in Greece. Trump shut down the idea of the Vatican immediately, with one source describing it as “a non-starter.” Greece, probably best known to Americans as “a sun-soaked vacation destination steeped in ancient history and democracy,” was seen as a compromise, the Daily Mail also reported.
