Alameda County’s Measure B leading in early results

Alameda County’s Measure B leading in early results

Early results show well above the majority of voters in favor of approving Measure B, an East Bay parcel tax that supporters say is needed to fund equipment, facility and technology improvements in a local hospital district, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.

If passed on Nov. 4, Measure B is expected to generate $13 million annually over the next 12 years for Washington Township Health Care District, a special district that includes the cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City, as well as parts of Hayward and Sunol.

Kimberly Hartz, Washington Hospital’s chief executive officer, said in a statement she is “thrilled” with the early returns on the results, and was “confident” that the measure would eventually pass. She thanked all who voted in this election.

“We are deeply grateful to those who believe in our mission and vision for local health care,” Hartz wrote. “Passage of Measure B will help ensure Washington Hospital is able to provide the highest level of emergency and medical care to our entire community for generations to come. We are deeply appreciative of the trust and confidence our community has placed in us.”

Ann Lopez, 47, voted yes on B Tuesday night at the Mark Green Sports Center in Union City.

“Sooner or later hospitals have to get funded. I’m an advocate for mental health, so anything for healthcare — I’m a yes,” Lopez, a Union City resident, said in an interview. “I care because it’s funding for a good cause.”

Similarly, Esther Go, a 24-year-old from Castro Valley, voted yes. She said with her vote, she’s “hoping that it will help out people who need it.”

But others were not so supportive of the proposed tax.

“I don’t like it,” Jim Nelson, a Fremont Republican voter, said in an interview after voting at his local vote center, the Veteran’s Memorial Hall.

He argued that the hospital “is asking for more and more money…It’s just constant. It doesn’t stop.”

Jose Madrigal, a Fremont Libertarian who voted at the veteran’s hall, also voted against B.

“I don’t know why they did it,” Madrigal said.

Though he opposed it in the ballot box, Madrigal also said if it passes, he has “no strong opinions” on it.

“I get it, but in general we need to spend the money we have,” he said.
