Bay Area high school football 2025: Week 11 preview, schedule

The 11th and final week of the high school football regular season has arrived.

This week’s lineup features a much-anticipated game in San Mateo between Archbishop Riordan and Serra for the West Catholic Athletic League championship.

Other big games include Oakland at McClymonds, Sobrato at Willow Glen, Half Moon Bay at Terra Nova, St. Ignatius vs. Sacred Heart Cathedral at Kezar Stadium, plus the Big Little Game (Antioch at Pittsburg) and Little Big Game (Burlingame at San Mateo) on Saturday.

The Bay Area News Group will have coverage all weekend – and season. Please sign up for a digital subscription if you have not already. Your contributions keep us going.

Here are this week’s top matchups:

Thursday

Half Moon Bay (6-3) at Terra Nova (7-2), 7 p.m.: Terra Nova is 12-10 in its annual Skull Game with rival Half Moon Bay since 2004 but has lost seven of the past nine in the series. Both teams enter this one in the midst of good seasons. Terra Nova won five in a row to capture the Peninsula Athletic League El Camino Division title. Half Moon Bay went 3-2 in the stronger PAL Ocean Division. In his team’s 35-13 win over Hillsdale last week, Half Moon Bay’s Paxton Holden rushed for 161 yards and four touchdowns in 17 carries and completed 3 of 4 passes for 64 yards and a TD. In Terra Nova’s 24-7 win over Gunn last week, Joey Donati passed for 137 yards and two TDs and ran for 122 yards in seven carries. HSRatings.com’s computer projects HMB to win 35-17. – Darren Sabedra

Friday

No. 2 Archbishop Riordan (9-0, 6-0) at No. 5 Serra (6-3, 6-0), 7 p.m.: The game of the year in the West Catholic Athletic League will decide its champion and likely the top seed in the Central Coast Section Open/Division I bracket. Riordan has aligned itself for success with senior Division I college talent all over the field, led by QB Michael Mitchell Jr., who has accounted for 38 TDs this season. Serra is a rapidly blossoming younger team led by a pair of inexperienced QBs, junior Caleb Bandel and freshman William Orr. Which one gets more snaps will be an interesting subplot. HSRatings.com projects a 34-24 Riordan win, which would give the Crusaders their first WCAL title since 2000. — Christian Babcock

St. Ignatius (3-6, 2-4) vs. No. 19 Sacred Heart Cathedral (4-5, 2-5) at Kezar Stadium, 6 p.m.: St. Ignatius is 16-6 against its archrival since 2004, which includes a 45-28 victory last season and 38-14 win in 2023. But SHC might have the upperhand in this year’s edition of the Bruce-Mahoney game. Last week, the Fightin’ Irish led St. Francis at halftime but eventually lost 21-20. The previous week, St. Francis routed SI 28-7. SHC’s Legend Williams needs 184 yards rushing to reach 1,000 for the season. Chase Jenkins has 801 receiving yards for the Fightin’ Irish. In SI’s 24-14 win over Valley Christian last week, Caedon Afsharipour threw for 140 yards and two TDs and ran for 50 yards and a TD in seven attempts. HSRatings.com projects SHC to win 31-24. – Darren Sabedra

Oakland (8-1, 4-0) at No. 7 McClymonds (7-2, 4-0), 7 p.m.: McClymonds has won five in a row since losing at California 28-20 in late September, including decisive wins over four Oakland Athletic League opponents. To win a fifth league game and capture another regular-season OAL title, Mack might have a challenge on its hands. Oakland has emerged as the league’s second-best team, also routing four OAL opponents to enter Friday’s game unbeaten in league play. But history isn’t on Oakland’s side. In 29 games against Mack since 2004, the Wildcats have won just once, 26-12 in 2008. HSRatings projects Mack to win 28-14. – Darren Sabedra

Sobrato (6-3, 4-0) at Willow Glen (7-2, 4-0), 7:15 p.m.: Willow Glen has a chance to win back-to-back Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa-Valley Division titles behind senior Aiden Akery. The Rams’ dual-threat quarterback leads Willow Glen on the ground and in the air as the centerpiece of a senior-laden team that rose up last year to win the league and looks primed to do so again. Sobrato finished second in the division last season. RB Brady Lennon has been a standout for the Bulldogs, rushing for 113.4 yards per game. HSRatings.com projects a 27-13 Willow Glen win. — Christian Babcock

Saturday

Burlingame (6-3, 3-1) at San Mateo (6-3, 3-1), 11 a.m.: The 98th Little Big Game will be a matchup between teams that are about as even as it gets. Both are tied for second in the Peninsula Athletic League’s De Anza Division and headed to the CCS playoffs next week. Burlingame has dominated the Little Big Game series since 2004, winning 18 of the 21 games, but San Mateo has prevailed in the past two. This season, Burlingame has won three in a row since losing to The King’s Academy 45-7 on Oct. 9. San Mateo has won its past two since falling to TKA 28-14 on Oct. 16. San Mateo’s Lukas Fitzgerald has rushed for 1,093 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a team, San Mateo has gained 2,773 yards on the ground to just 174 through the air. Burlingame’s Nick Armstrong has passed for 1,125 yards and 11 TDs, and his brother, Will Armstrong, has caught 45 passes for 714 yards and seven TDs. Burlingame leads the Little Big Game series 59-34-4 but is projected by HSRatings.com to lose Saturday, 26-22. – Darren Sabedra

Antioch (7-2, 3-1) at No. 3 Pittsburg (8-1, 3-1), 1:30 p.m.: A Big Little Game matchup as notable for off-field incidents as on will wrap up Bay Valley Athletic League play for both teams. Pittsburg will introduce its 2026 Hall of Fame class prior to the game, which includes Herc Pardi, the last East Bay coach to beat De La Salle. Antioch is coming off a forfeit to Liberty after a locker-room video showed misconduct by Panthers players. Despite this, a win would give Antioch a share of the league title, capping a resurgent season that began with the Panthers’ best start since 2015, Najee Harris’ senior year. HSRatings.com projects a 44-10 Pittsburg victory and gives the Pirates a 98% chance to win. — Christian Babcock
