Nancy Pelosi, the US House’s first and only female speaker and a dominant Democratic figure for decades, announced Thursday she will not seek re-election, ending her nearly 40-year congressional career.
In a sweeping video announcement framed as a “love letter” to San Francisco, Pelosi said, “I will not be seeking reelection to Congress.” She added, “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.” Reflecting on her time in Washington, Pelosi stated, “there has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, ‘I speak for the people of San Francisco.’”
