Oakland: Man witnessed his son get shot in the head, daughter get shot and paralyzed

OAKLAND — A local resident has been arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting up a car full of family members, striking a man in the head and paralyzing a woman from the neck down.

Both victims, aged 18 and 19, survived the Jan. 12 shooting. Police say the victims’ father was driving the vehicle, witnessed the entire incident and drove them to a hospital afterward.

The suspect, identified in court records as 23-year-old Adriel Elias Torres, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, and three counts of shooting into an occupied car, court records show. He remains in jail without bail, and is next due in court to enter a plea on Feb. 27.

The shooting occurred around 5 a.m. on Jan. 12, outside a home on the 2600 block of 77th Avenue. The family was heading to a local flea market when they heard gunshots, followed by Elias Torres allegedly walking up and asking, “who are you,” police said.

The victims ignored him and got into the car. When Elias Torres lingered, one of the occupants allegedly opened the door to attempt to strike him with it, and he responded by firing his gun, striking the 18-year-old woman in the shoulder, authorities said.

Her father drove a short distance, but stopped to see if she was OK, allowing Elias Torres to fire a second volley of shots into the car, striking the 19-year-old man in the head, authorities said. Elias Torres was identified as a suspect from his vehicle and eyewitnesses, according to court records. He was arrested on Feb. 1.

Police say Elias Torres lives 100 yards away from the victims. Police had been called to his home last year, when a neighbor accused Elias Torres of throwing bricks at his home during an argument, authorities said.
