Concord police fatally shoot man they confronted stabbing relative in residence

CONCORD — A man was fatally shot by police Tuesday morning after they confronted him actively stabbing a family member inside a residence, authorities said.

The name and age of the man killed has not yet been released.

Police have not confirmed media reports the person being stabbed was the man’s father.

The person stabbed was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Police said that about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday police dispatch received a 911 call about a person attacking a family member with a knife on the 1900 block of Natoma Drive.

When officers got there, they saw an adult male stabbing a family member.

At least one officer shot the man armed with the knife and he was pronounced dead at the home, police said.

Police have not yet said how many officers fired their weapons. No officers were injured. Per protocol, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while the department and the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office investigate.

The area around the residence was closed Tuesday morning while police investigated. Authorities were asking people to avoid the area.

Police said they would continue to release updates on the shooting.
