Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week: Bianca Putanec, Menlo School soccer

Menlo School soccer goalkeeper Bianca Putanec is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week for Feb. 17-22.

In online voting that ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Putanec finished with 40.93% of the votes. Mitty soccer midfielder Murphy Walsh took second at 25.71%.

Congrats to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Putanec, a senior, came up big in goal with four saves of penalty kicks to lift Menlo past Carlmont (1-1, 5-4 PKs) and into the CCS Division III semifinals. She also led the Knights to a win over Notre Dame-Belmont earlier in the week.

To nominate an athlete for next week’s poll, email [email protected] by Monday at 11 a.m. Please include stats and team results.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps.com by coaches/team statisticians for consideration.

Votes by email do not count. Only votes submitted through the online poll on the Mercury News and East Bay Times websites will count.

Winners are announced each Friday on the Mercury News and East Bay Times websites and in the print edition of the Mercury News and EB Times sports sections.
