City Lights springs Agatha Christie’s ‘Mousetrap’

Clever ‘Trap’

The longest-running play in the world comes to downtown San Jose when City Lights Theater Company presents Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” March 13-April 6.

Introduced as a radio play called “Three Blind Mice,” “The Mousetrap” opened in 1952 at the Ambassador Theatre in London, starring Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim. In 1974, it moved to St. Martin’s Theatre in London. The play has run continuously since its opening, save for a COVID hiatus from March 2020 to May 2021.

Set in a snowed-in English country house, “The Mousetrap” is, of course, a murder mystery. Trapped in Monkswell Manor, guests and staff are interrogated by a police detective who arrives on skis after a local woman is murdered. The play is directed by Doll Piccotto, who is back City Lights after helming the 2022 production of Christie’s “The Hollow.”

City Lights Theater is located at 529 S. Second St. For tickets, visit cltc.org/mousetrap.

Neighborhood Notes

CAMBRIAN>>Students at Price Middle School recently organized a bake sale to raise money for victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. Ashley Abuda, Camila Castro and Briana Tan—all officers in the National Junior Honor Society—raised $1,638 in the effort, which saw 48 families donate baked goods for sale.

“We wanted to do something to help,” Tan said.

The three eighth-graders were due to present a check to the Red Cross on Feb. 28, and to receive certificates of appreciation from same.
