The 20-year-old Cagnoni, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, was a fourth-round draft choice by the Sharks in 2023. In his last season with the Portland Winterhawks, Cagnoni had 90 points in just 65 regular season games, becoming the first WHL defenseman in over 30 years to record at least 90 points in a season.

After signing his entry-level contract with the Sharks in May of last year, Cagnoni said it was his goal to become professional. He was eligible to return to Portland, but since he turned 20 in December, he was also eligible to join the Barracuda. CHL players had to be 20 by Dec. 31 of last year to be eligible to play in the AHL.
